How far AI has gone in outbound and where it keeps hitting a wall
Will AI take over outbound?
I had a conversation with Evan Dunn about where outbound is headed. We had our own opinions. So I threw it to the community.
The channel nobody wants to admit is dying.
Nathaniel Dean didn't sugarcoat it. The effectiveness of email has already dropped significantly because of automation. With AI, the cost of high-quality outreach goes to zero and so does the return. His take: we're basically losing cold outreach email as a channel.
Then Evan Dunn dropped the legal reality.
AI cannot legally place cold calls in the US without a human picking up within two seconds, or use AI-generated voice at all, without prior express consent. Most G20 countries are following suit. The telcos are enforcing it.
Cold calling isn't being replaced by AI. It's being protected from it by law.
Not every AI outbound story has a happy ending..
Vern Hubbard's company ran 7,000 AI-personalized emails across six personas over four months. Zero positive responses. Switched to human-built messaging. Immediately started getting replies that turned into conversations.
AI will tee it up. You still have to hit the ball.
The practitioner reality check!
Deb has been in outbound prospecting for five years. Her observation: most people building these AI tools have never actually done outbound. They think it's linear. Find people, write emails, send, book meetings. But enterprise selling doesn't work that way. It takes multiple touchpoints, timing, context, and knowing how to read signals. As long as there's a human on the other side buying, there needs to be a human on this side selling.
The proof point that changed the framing.
Phil Norris's team pulls transcripts from influencer videos and references specific timestamps in the opening line of outreach emails. Reply rates up 20%. Not because AI writes magical emails. Because it lets them scale the kind of research that would take a human team far longer to do manually.
AI isn't replacing judgment. It's multiplying the time available to use it.
The line that closed it…
The thread didn't produce a winner. It produced a boundary. Everything before the relationship: AI. Everything inside it: still you.
