I'm running an experiment of my own right now: old-school outbound for community invites, no AI optimization, no personalization theater. My hypothesis is that credibility beats cleverness for a $0 ask. Wish me luck, results soon.
So when Summer Delaney asked the community what still gets cold leads to book demos, I read every reply twice. The thread turned into the most honest field report on outbound I've seen this year, and it produced one artifact I can't stop thinking about.
Reps have started promising a human wrote the email.
The Pause Heard Across Five Communities
Summer Delaney runs GTM at a company that converts well once a prospect books. Her problem lives entirely upstream. Response rates on automated sequences fell far enough that she paused them outright, and demos started coming from conferences and reseller channels instead.
Rather than quietly rebuilding the sequence, she asked the community a flat question: what is working right now to get cold leads onto the calendar? Then she asked the same question in several other founder and GTM communities, and came back with the synthesis.
The report landed without a silver bullet in it. No channel hack, no template, no tool. What it described instead was a market where the buyer's default assumption has flipped: every message is presumed automated until proven otherwise.
That presumption is the story. Everything else in the thread is operators reacting to it.
The Disclaimer Appears
Richard Harris, who ran our April edition on discovery, posted the reply that names the moment. His diagnosis: everyone's messaging is now competing against AI volume, the writing is easy to spot, and the fix is more humanity. Then he offered the line reps are starting to use:
"Call it out: 'Hi ____, First, I am typing this myself, no automation, no bots, no AI....'"
Sit with how strange that artifact is. Two years into the AI outbound gold rush, the highest-leverage opening line in a cold email is a promise that no AI was involved.
The disclaimer is a captcha in prose, the sender certifying their species before making a point. Its existence says more about the state of the channel than any benchmark report. When proving you're human is the hook, the medium's trust layer has failed.
Everyone Sent the Same Email
Corinna Lohse pushed the diagnosis past the disclaimer:
Sujoy Chaudhary drew the same conclusion from the channel side: conferences are the best-performing channel in B2B right now because "every other channel has been gamed a little too much."
Put the two together and the picture sharpens. Outbound didn't die of automation. It died of sameness at scale. AI lowered the cost of sending to zero, so everyone sent, and the messages converged on the same shape. The channels that still work, conferences, referrals, partnerships, are simply the ones where sameness can't be mass-produced.
What Five Communities Agreed On
Summer's cross-community synthesis is worth reading as a single field report, because the same five themes surfaced everywhere she asked:
Lower volume, higher relevance. The outreach that lands references something happening in the prospect's business this week, not their job title.
LinkedIn has folded into the sequence. Email first, connect, engage, continue the conversation there.
Trust is the bottleneck. Demonstrating real understanding of the business now outweighs message quality.
Founder-led channels beat traditional outbound everywhere: referrals, conferences, communities, thought leadership.
Shrink the first ask. An observation or a question starts more conversations than "book a demo."
Her closing read: outbound isn't dead, but the winning teams have replaced scale with relevance.
Trust Refuses to Scale
Ozan Dagdeviren, whose self-reporting data anchored last week's edition, added the constraint that keeps the whole thread honest:
That sentence explains why the disclaimer exists. Real relevance is expensive. It requires research, judgment, and time, the three things volume outbound was invented to avoid. A one-line "no AI" promise is the cheap substitute: it tries to buy the trust without doing the work that earns it.
Which is why the disclaimer will burn out fast. The moment it spreads, the bots will type it too.
Relevance Is the Only Moat Left
The thread's real conclusion is harder than "be more human."
Sameness is now free, so distinctiveness is the entire game. The teams booking meetings are the ones who found something true about the prospect's business and led with it, at volumes low enough to keep that bar. The disclaimer, the LinkedIn weave, the smaller first ask, all of it is downstream of one decision: fewer sends, more knowing.
Run the audit on your own outbound this week. Take the last ten cold messages your team sent and ask whether any sentence in them could only have been written about that one company. If the answer is no, the buyer's spam instinct is right about you, and no disclaimer will fix it.
The captcha will stop working the day the bots learn to type it.
The research never will.
