The Missing CRM Field
Why your Closed Lost data is lying to you (and how to fix it).
The Missing CRM Code: Rep Error
A member sparked a debate by asking why we don't have a "Rep Error" code for lost deals arguing that bad discovery or poor multi-threading is often the real reason we lose not "timing" or "budget."
The community’s take on owning your losses:
→The Data is Skewed by Ego. It is human nature to blame external factors. Because it's hard to look inward, CRM data rarely reflects the reality that the rep simply didn't create urgency or failed to enable the champion.
→Culture Over Code. You might not need a literal "I Messed Up" dropdown. Instead, build a culture of "Deal Retros" and candor where performance is measured through the lens of failure and learning, not just wins.
→Tech Can't Fix Self-Awareness. While tools like Gong or Chorus can identify missed opportunities in the transcript, they aren't perfect. The insight ultimately has to come from the rep and the manager.
→The Fix is Coaching. If the rep made a mistake (talked too much, didn't listen), that is fixable. But it requires a leader who coaches on those specific skills rather than just accepting "Ghosted" as a valid reason.
Bottom line:
Your "Closed Lost" data is likely full of excuses. The first step to fixing the win rate isn't a new tool, it's admitting, "It was my fault," and coaching to make sure it doesn't happen again. 📉➡️📈
